In Shirdi, the 19th century abode of Shri Sai Baba, this festival is celebrated with great zest by its people. The history of Ram Navami Festival in Shirdi dates back to the late nineteenth century. One of the devotees of Sai Baba called 'Gopalrao Gund', suggested that devotees celebrate 'Urus' or fair in the honour of Muslim holy men. This idea was approved by Sai Baba along with his blessings, and people of Shirdi began celebrating Urus on the day of Ram Navami. Processions were taken through the village, accompanied by music played by a band on this day. In the early twentieth century, a devotee known as Krishnarao Jageshwar Bhishma, suggested Mr. Laxmanrao that Ram Navami be celebrated on the day of Urus. Laxmanrao, who was popularly known as Kaka Mahajani, sought the permission of Shri Sai Baba in this matter. Sai Baba gladly gave his permission to celebrate the festival, and the Urus gradually gave way to Ram Navami celebrations. The tradition of celebrating this festival continues even today in Shirdi. On this day, the town witnesses large crowds of devotees and tourists who come from distant places to seek the blessings of the revered saint, Shri Sai Baba.
